First English edition. Aidan Elis, London, 1984. Translated by Walter Kaiser.
Yourcenar's first novel, met with huge acclaim at the time of its publication in French in 1929, and only published in English more than 50 years later in this edition. A classic of queer literature, she writes with profound empathy from the perspective of a gay man married to a woman.
