First edition, interesting association. Crime Club, London, 1964. Hardcover. Original red binding modified with a gild stamp of Ladycross, a catholic school in Seaford. Some bumping on spine ends. Dust jacket is price-clipped, with a 1.5cm chip on top edge. Tanned all around, most noticeably at spine.
This first edition of A Caribbean Mystery was presented as a prize to Edward Fitzgerald, the British barrister specialised in Criminal, Public, and Human Rights Law, who has dedicated his career to fight against the death penalty. This book was the prize that would have been presented to him while studying at the preparatory school for his "open scholarship", as indicated in a bookplate on the pastedown, likely around the time of publication of book, when he would have been about 12. In an interesting connection to Christie's genre, Fitzgerald is married to Rebecca Fraser, daughter of detective fiction writer Antonia Fraser.
