Mary McCarthy

Novelist and literary critic, McCarthy was a divisive figure throughout her career. Her fiction, as much as her criticism, was deeply committed to the truth, which famously not everyone wants to hear. In the words of Chris Krauss, "McCarthy is cruel to her subjects, but she’s never as cruel to them as she is to herself, and she’s present at all times in all of her fiction".
